In case you hadn’t noticed, the United States is a really weird place. Not that “weird” is always bad. Sometimes “weird” can keep life interesting. But without a doubt, the United States is one of the most unique nations in the history of the world. Some of the weird facts about the United States listed below may be difficult for you to believe. Others are likely to completely shock you. Hopefully there is a little something for everyone in this article, and hopefully you will learn some new things from reading it. I know that I certainly learned some new things as I wrote it. In general, everything tends to be larger in America. The people are larger, the cars are larger, the divorce rate is the highest on the planet and the U.S. government has piled up the largest debt in the history of the world. Whether America does something good or bad, it usually does it in a very “big” way. It is easy to love the United States and all the good that it has done, but it is also easy to be horrified by how far this nation has fallen and by the direction that this country is currently headed. So where does America go from here? That is a very good question.

The Afghan population is already tired of US presence. The last thing we want to do is invite the Russians in, who are still remembered for slaughtering millions of Afghans in the Soviet-Afghan war. If you want to win the hearts and minds of the Afghans, which is the only way to truly defeat the Taliban, under no circumstances should you bring the Russians into this.

The Soviets failed to conquer Afghanistan; so did the British a century earlier. There is no reason we will be any more successful than were Queen Victoria or Gorbachev; American forces have been there for a decade. Our supply lines are weak, with a hostile Iran and an increasingly restive Pakistan on either side of this landlocked country. If Pakistan tips to the other side and the ex-Soviet Central Asian republics re-enter Moscow's orbit, we would be forced to leave even ahead of the President's timetable. The best way to support our troops, as Paul Bright states, is to get them out of Afghanistan and to withdraw to Kuwait or stateside.

I think all the others are missing your point. I didn't read you as saying "bring the Russian Army in". Your suggestion is a reasonable one given the troubles with Pakistan supply lines. But looking at a map you can see that Russia is not a neighbor to Afghanistan. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union (and I'd remind your nay sayers that it was the Soviet Union that invaded Afghanistan back in the '80s) it is Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan that border Afghanistan. And I believe we already have some of their cooperation. How eslse could the Russian supply lines help?

Russia failed totally in Afghanistan-they went in to exterminate the populace and make it a new territory of their empire. The population from the Soviet invasion in 1979 to 1986 went down by 2/3rds! Only after the US provided Stinger missiles and mostly negated their air power did they withdraw. Remember Georgia,summer of 2009? Same plan-go in,expel or execute any non-Russian locals,then declare it a part of your own country! Russia is today doing everything it can to block supply of US and NATO forces in that country. Putin hates freedom. Putin hates America,and wants to run the cold war again,hoping to win this time. Obama is stupid enough to let him.

I would like to hear how the United States went from the biggest lender country in the world to the biggest debtor country in the world. I think our government owes the people an explanation. The problem with your statement is that “W” Bush got us into a couple of wars and wrecked the economy and bailed out a number of banks. He doubled the debt from 5 trillion to over 10. When Obama got in the Whitehouse the economy was already nosediving and without revenue (due in large part to unemployment and unpaid for tax cuts). Structural thing he left to Obama to clean up, like having to finish up wartime operations.

Romney is no different than Obama (they're both funded by Goldman Sachs!). The Federal Reserve is neither federal nor do they hold anything in reserve. It is a privately owned bank that has been given the authority to inflate the US currency on a whim. Printing more money in excess only inflates the currency (look up the term "fiat money"). In less economic terms, it's theft. You can't get out of debt by spending more money and devaluing a nation's currency, it will only end in economic collapse.

It seems Americans would rather pay for gasoline on our 1040 forms than at the pump. About half of the Federal budget goes to pay for past and current wars. None of these wars is defensive. They are all, in some way, about securing cut-rate access to foreign petroleum and other natural resources. Cut the wars of aggression out, and we could pay off the Federal debt in a few years and pay for universal health care. So even if you didn't make a penny in this country you still have to file tax returns and may be subject to double taxation or arrested at the border for tax evasion if you never filed a tax return while living outside the US. Our recent economic troubles can be directly linked to rising fuel prices; in 2003 gas prices nearly doubled over night because of the invasion of Iraq, a war that was started for no tangible reason and without a long-term finance plan. Also consider that with the rise of fuel came the rise of cost of commercial goods, like food, water, and natural gas. Mass inflation followed, pushing the average American even closer to poverty, and couple that with the sheer stupidity in most Americans' spending habits, and now you have half the population broke and the other half to wary to spend any money. If no one is making big-ticket purchases like cars and houses, they aren't buying the stuff to go in them, and now you have the story of the Great Recession. Oh yeah, it took 15 years a world war to pull us out of the Depression, which is really what is happening now if everyone would just wake up and smell the proverbial bacon frying. FDR actually created debt to give people jobs so they could eat, not waste it on some frivolous war that cost more then 15 trillion dollars to date. He was also the only president to be re-elected more then twice, and managed to successfully navigate us through WWII.

Sorry but the current recession was started by a crackdown on businesses (think ENRON) then was exploded by the Chuck Shumer bill REQUIRING banks to give out a certain percentage of home loans to people who did not qualify for them.
What a shock, a few years later they defaulted in HUGE numbers. The housing market collapsed, FANNIE and FREDDIE went broke, banks and other financial institutions failed in record numbers (not enough income from loan defaults), THEN massive government bailouts. Banks under pressure, people (think small businesses) cannot borrow money, money tight, businesses lay off workers.
All of this was (is) foreseeable as a direct cause-and-effect. Even a fifth grader can connect the dots and see the picture.
AND JUST IN CASE YOU FORGOT: We were not fighting these wars on Sept 11, 2001 when OBL killed 3000 of our people, just as he had vowed. We ignored, or were "tolerant", when they bombed the WTC in 1993, threw a handicapped USA Citizen, Leon Klinghoffer, overboard, bombed the USS Cole, and bombed the Marine Corps barracks in Lebanon. When do you think these things would have stopped or did you prefer we fight here on American soil? (Did you like the movie RED DAWN?)

I had to give you a thumb's down, JW. "Jimmy" inherited a twisted system from Nixon. Gerald Ford *started* to straighten it out — keeping Volker at the Fed and making real budget reforms, but Congress hated him for pardoning Dick, and that hamstrung that effort. So Jimmy comes in, listens to a lot of smart people, designs some great reforms and government re-designs, and *still* Congress stalled it. Reagan comes in "with a mandate[!]", bulldozes much past a stunned Congress, and cuts the size of government *while* growing programs. (So yes, much of what Reagan did, Nixon's people designed, Ford's people kept on Life Support, and Jimmy patted on the paddles yelling, "Clear! Clear!" for four years. And that lasted 8 years. Cue up the hands-not-actually-on-the-wheel Bush2 presidency, along with *two* major economic restructurings (".com/9-11" and National Credit Hangover/"Great Recession") and Oh!Bummer! comes into office with a challenge unknown since FDR. (I did crack up when he said something like, "This will take us a couple of months…" upon taking office. He's wisely backed away from that one.) Anyway JW, the point is, US presidents and their macro policies rarely have immediate impact, AND it is CONGRESS who controls "the power of the purse" — but we still hear about the President's Budget with the words "proposed" left out. Not when you consider the total population of Greece is 10.7 million persons versus the US at 316 million persons. Even at what is termed full emplpyment, there is still an estimated 5% of the population who will be unable to employed for various physical, mental or other reasons, which would still result in an eunemployment figure of 15.8 million, still far higher than the population of Greece.

I believe #10 is wrong. We visited Puerto Rico ( a US Territory ) and they have several commercial coffee growing operations that we saw. I do not know what certifies a commercial grower to be on this list, but I would think growing coffe and selling it as their own product or to other major suppliers would probably count as a commercial grower.

The saddest part about the whole situation is that this Nation has lacked true leadership for a long, long time. The fact that Mr. Obama, the Kenyan, continues to get involved in "racially charges issues" at a local government level is tantamount to his own focus on race and not on leading this nation. His threats to the world are ignored as are Ms Clinton's. You can blame Bush for his contribution to the deficit, but Obama put it into overdrive. The whole situation stinks. As to the reason for the poverty level and illegitimate births is the money that these women receive from the government actually puts them above the poverty line, along with all the disability payments for the druggies and the obese. Yeah, right–America has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the world? There isn't even any data for almost all of Africa–what's the average teen pregnancy rate there, I wonder?

Where did you come up with some of these numbers? Wikipedia is not all knowing, and some of their "proof" is obviously done by folks who do not understand how a Mercator Projection map works. Michigan alone has over one tenth of Alaska's coastline, and your percentage of Americans with motor vehicles should instead state automobiles to be near accurate. Here are some facts that will shock anyone you meet in Europe
1) A 20 year old can't buy a beer in the United States
2) If an American parent loses their job and can't afford COBRA and their 6 year old daughter gets a brain tumor or leukemia, unlike Australia, Germany, France, Japan, Singapore, England, Hong Kong, etc. She isn't going to get any medical treatment, and she'll die.
3) Like Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, China and Yemen, we still kill people as punishment.

5) We treat drug addiction as a criminal problem rather than a medical problem and fill our jails with drug addicts

Don't they understand that a balanced budget in Washington means that they did not spend more that what they decided to spend. This is a weird fact about the U.S. There are 3 states that have land in which you have to travel out of the state to get there. Washington State, Minnesota and Kentucky. In Washington State, you drive through British Columbia to get to Point Roberts. In Minnesota, you drive into Manitoba to get to Northwest Angle. And then there is the area of SW Kentucky that you have to drive into Tennessee to reach. You can find it across the river from New Madrid, MO.
