19 Signs That America Is Becoming A Very Heartless Place
The economy is not the only thing that is wrong with America. In order for a society to function smoothly, people need to be able to trust one another and be able to expect that most of their fellow citizens will behave in a somewhat civilized manner. Unfortunately, we are starting to see the very fabric of our society slowly unravel all over the nation. The truth is that America is becoming a very heartless place. People simply do not care about one another the way that they used to in this country. Of course there are many exceptions, but the reality is that millions of hearts are going cold from coast to coast. In America today, we are more self-absorbed than ever, more self-centered than ever, and we are more isolated from others than ever. Just think about the number of people that you personally interact with on a regular basis. Unless you are involved with a very large organization such as a school or a church, it is probably a very limited number. Our addiction to entertainment gives us the illusion of being connected to society, but the truth is that Americans spend less time personally interacting with one another than ever before. Meanwhile, Americans are seemingly becoming more arrogant, more prideful, more angry, more brutal, more greedy and more addicted to pleasure than ever before. When you combine millions of very cold hearts with an economy that is rapidly crumbling, that adds up to a whole lot of trouble in the years ahead.
Even government authorities are becoming heartless. TSA agents and police officers are actually trained to “act tough” and to bark orders at us. In the old days, you could reason with a police officer, but these days if you try to talk common sense with some of these thugs you will get tasered before you even realize what is happening.
The American people can see the deep corruption in Washington D.C. and throughout most of our other major institutions and they wonder why they should keep trying to do “the right thing”.
If our leaders are selfish and heartless, then it is only natural that millions of average Americans will follow their examples.
In America today, we are taught to hate one another. Democrats are taught to hate Republicans and Republicans are taught to hate Democrats. We are a deeply divided nation and our hearts are getting colder with each passing year.
Parents are becoming more cruel, thieves are becoming more bold and thugs are becoming more brutal. Hate, anger and frustration are fueling some really twisted behavior all over the country. America is changing, and not for the better.
The following are 19 signs that America is becoming a very heartless place….
#1 At one airport in Hawaii, TSA agents recently required one new mother to go to a public restroom and fill up the empty baby bottles she was carrying with breast milk before they would allow her to get on to her flight. The following is how one local news station described the incident….
She claims agents told her she couldn’t take the pump on the plane because the bottles in her carry-on were empty.
“I asked him if there was a private place I could pump and he said no, you can go in the women’s bathroom. I had to stand in front of the mirrors and the sinks and pump my breast in front of every tourist that walked into that bathroom. I was embarrassed and humiliated and then angry that I was treated this way.
When the bottles were full, she was allowed back on the plane.
#2 One way that a society is judged is by how it treats children. Unfortunately, stories such as the following one from Texas are becoming increasingly common in America today….
Texas authorities said Tuesday they removed 11 children from a crowded home where a registered sex offender lives after they found eight confined in a small, dark bedroom with restraints tying some to their beds.
Along with the children, 10 adults were living in the one-story, 1,700-square-foot home in Dayton, about 30 miles northeast of Houston, Child Protective Services spokeswoman Gwen Carter said. One month after a raid on the house, authorities are still trying to determine how the children are related and why they were there, she said.
#3 Across the United States, there have been an increasing number of reports of teens randomly attacking people on the street for no apparent reason whatsoever. In some cases, the victims are actually being pulled out of their vehicles. The following recent example comes from Philadelphia….
IN A HORRIFIC assault in Center City on Saturday night, three teenagers who were spouting racial slurs pulled a man out of a cab to beat him. And when the cabdriver intervened to stop the assault, the teens turned their rage on him, police said yesterday.
#4 One man down in Arizona was recently charged with skinning and eating a cat. He told authorities that he did it because he was “hungry”.
#5 In the Detroit area, an 86-year-old World War II veteran was recently brutally carjacked in the middle of the day at a gas station. His leg was broken during the assault, and as he slowly crawled across the concrete parking lot many people walked by him and drove by him as if he was not even there.
#6 One 69-year-old woman down in Texas recently went without running water for six years and nobody ever helped her out until just recently.
#7 In Ohio, one man has been charged with raping three children that he adopted and with allowing other men to have sex with them as well.
#8 One man down in Texas was recently fined by the city government for not mowing the lawn of a house that he had already lost to foreclosure.
#9 These days thieves will steal anything that is metal that they think that they can resell. In the Philadelphia area recently, there has been a rash of brass door knocker thefts. Thieves have been going up and pulling them right off of the front doors of private homes.
#10 As the price of gasoline rises, gasoline thieves are becoming more creative. The following is a recent example from the Tampa Bay area….
As gas thefts go, this one was deceptively elaborate.
Inside a blue Chevrolet Venture minivan, criminals had cut out a large hole in the floorboard and set up a portable pumping station, complete with power source, pump and plastic container.
The goal: to steal hundreds of gallons of gas pulled directly from the gas station’s underground storage tank and funneled into a plastic tank inside the van.
Gasoline thefts have become so common in Detroit that one city councilman wants to force gas station owners to hire security guards.
#11 One 29-year-old female tutor was recently arrested for having a sexual relationship with a 12-year-old boy that she was supposed to be tutoring.
#12 The ACLU is trying to force one library district in Washington state to allow full public access to pornography on library computers – even if children will be walking by and able to see what is going on.
#13 In America today, a lot of parents are becoming extremely cruel. Down in Alabama, one 9-year-old girl recently died after being forced by her mother and grandmother to run for three hours straight as punishment for lying about having eaten some candy bars.
#14 Some Americans have become so desperate that they are trying to get sent to prison on purpose. For example, one ex-police officer in Georgia recently robbed a bank and allowed authorities to catch him so that he could get food, shelter and free medical care in jail.
#15 What can account for the rash of seemingly random violent crimes that we have been seeing lately? Over near Seattle, an 88-year-old man and an 83-year-old woman were brutally attacked by a 31-year-old man armed with a crossbow and a hatchet for no apparent reason whatsoever….
Prosecutors say 31-year-old John Chase was walking down the highway when he saw Ralph Aldrich, 88, in his back yard. Detectives say Chase shot and killed Aldrich with a crossbow and then went inside the home and repeatedly hit 83-year-old June Aldrich with a hatchet.
#16 In America today, many people are so angry and so frustrated that even the slightest provocation can push them over the edge. For example, one man in Georgia actually firebombed a Taco Bell because they did not put enough meat in his Chalupa.
#17 These days Americans are having a hard time feeling safe in their own homes. Down in Maryland, one very sick home invader was recently sentenced to 100 years in prison for doing some very twisted things….
In one case, authorities said, he sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl after breaking into her family’s Fort Washington home with a cinder block and forced her to pose nude on a bed as he took photographs and videos of her. Authorities said in another case, Scott and an accomplice, Marcus Dermanellian Hunter – who has already pleaded guilty to federal firearms charges – held up a Bowie family at gunpoint in April 2009, used their debit cards to steal money from ATM machines and then stole a luxury car.
#18 In America today you never know who is going to come driving up to you on the street. Most of the time people that you meet will be at least somewhat “normal”, but there is also a chance that the next strangers that you run into will be crack-fueled perverts. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened to a Montana teacher named Sherry Arnold…
Spell and Waters had left Colorado days before the crime claiming they wanted work in eastern Montana and western North Dakota’s oil fields.
After smoking crack cocaine over the entire trip, Waters allegedly told Spell the drug ‘brought the devil out in him’ and began talking about kidnapping and killing a female, AP reports.
After they spotted Arnold, Spell claims that Waters told him to ‘grab the lady’ and pull her into their Ford Explorer as she jogged by.
After they got her into the Ford Explorer, they choked the life out of her and then buried her body in a shallow grave in North Dakota.
#19 In the Boston area, the FBI recently used a chainshaw to cut through the front door of one apartment during a raid. They quickly subdued the woman living inside and had her on the floor for 35 minutes as her young daughter cried out to her. Eventually they figured out that they had the wrong apartment and they issued a “routine apology” to the woman.
As our country falls apart all around us, there is going to be a greater need for love and compassion than ever before.
Don’t count on the government to help those in need. The government always does a miserable job of that.
As I have written about previously, already more than 40 percent of all children in Atlanta and more than 50 percent of all children in Detroit are living in poverty.
In the years ahead those numbers are going to get even worse.
But it isn’t just in the major cities where poverty is exploding. Sadly, today one out of every four children in the United States is on food stamps.
As times get tough, you have two choices.
You can allow your heart to grow cold like so many other people are doing.
Or you can decide that you are going to become more loving and more compassionate than ever before.
America is becoming a very heartless place, and unfortunately there is no sign that trend is going to turn around any time soon.
But you don’t have to become heartless.
Be a light that shines in the darkness.
In the end, you will be glad that you were.

12:18 pm
We are all freakin' doomed.
3:50 pm
Yea, Bush screwed us all
12:34 pm
Maybe if the President would stop preaching class warfare and put people to work we would feel better about ourselves.
11:51 pm
The above post is a perfect example of what suckers we have become to have fallen for how the politicos, left and right, have got us blaming the "other side" for every problem we have.
11:08 am
You shold have advocated that two administrations ago.
1:26 pm
Why is it the President's job to put people to work? Why don't YOU go out and create a job for yourself and/or others as well – stop looking for someone else to fix the problem.
3:59 pm
This is true. The welfare system, and dependency on govt in general are an affront to the human spirit. They now exist as a way to keep a segment of the population under society's thumb and out of the way of the middle class' lock on so-called livable wages. This they support for two reasons. First, because it let's them feel good about themselves with no actual effort or sacrifice, much less considering the reality of the human toll. Second, they have a Malthusian glass is half empty view and selfishly want to keep it to themselves.
The poor want jobs, and they lack the largely unnecessary previous experience demanded by employers today. The only way to rectify this is for there to be more jobs than people available at those currently overly high standards. When that happens, employers relax hiring standards, and more people have jobs. This can only happen if there is a lot of business being done because there is profit to be made. This is called an employees' market. Thanks to the jealousy, envy, and cynicism of the mass society, and the power hunger of America's political class, we have the worst employers' market this nation has seen since the Great Depression.
President Obama makes $400,000 a year as president and makes quite a bit more than that on the side from investments angriest books. He has never been on welfare, never known the suffering of the poor, and puts his obsession with ideological nonsense ahead of economic opportunity for all. He doesn't care that what he supports keeps the poor dependent and demoralized, without any of the hope he speaks of. I have been poor. The poor want to work, they are willing to bust their backs at it, but the system is firmly designed now to prevent them from having a proper chance, which is all they ever asked for.
Can you blame the people for slowly losing their minds when they live in a nation that lives a hypocritical lie? Eventually, there comes a psychological break, and the one that is coming won't be pretty.
1:27 pm
Really Really …… 30 yrs ago you made 30,000.00 the ceo made 300,000.00 now you make 30,000.00 and the ceo makes 3mil the income disparity in this country is insane you don't think that's class warfare tax breaks for the rich and make the middle class pay for it give me a break …
2:53 pm
Gary;
I think its so much better for the working people to know that Romney wants to give the rich a 150 thosand dollar tax cut, and 250 dollars annually to a family making 50 thousand dolars.
2:57 am
Your comment is a prime example of degeneration in America. I.e. Republicans vs. Democrats, ohh, the irony.
7:27 pm
It's not the President who is inciting class warfare it's the rich Conservatives who have millions of $ & continually remind us how much richer they are than the middle class. Cayman Island bank accts, don't know much about sports-but know the owners, own several gas-guzzling vehicles, & admit that they don't care about poor people, etc. That's preaching class warfare.
10:38 am
You mean if *someone else* took action, *you* would feel better….. This is the problem….
12:43 pm
isn't most of these 19 related to fear and far right radio telling us to be afraid of everything
10:40 pm
No. it is the far Left that likes to create fear. look at the past near-four years of the present administration. Look at the way they communicate with the public. Look at the way they treat Conservatives. Look at the way Bill Maher communicates filth on TV. Before the Obama administration, this would NEVER has occurred.
Before the Obama administration, the US WAS getting along racially. There were no problems other than isolated incidents. People were basically respecting each other and would speak kindly to each other on the street. Before the Obama administration, we had under $2/gal. Gas, milk was a dollar less a gallon, bread was usually under a dollar a loaf. Before the Obama administration, we could have ALL our Constitutional rights intact, and on and on until we have no rights left…only Ridiculous, unreasonable Executive Orders just as a monarch would mandate.
This must stop and it starts big-time in November.
3:32 pm
you are kidding right? the current administration didn't start an unjustified war overseas. the economy was already in shambles when the obama adminstration took office. do you really support no tax increase on the wealthy? are you the 1% who makes $250,000? who created the tax law but the same people who are governing who make at least $250,000 and claim that they are hurting america when they want to keep themselves wealthy. and wait until you are actually really sick and question our government's current medical insurance infrastructure or become old and have worked all your life to learn that you can't afford medical insurance when you've contributed so much to the government who is supposed to assist you when you retire. do you know which congress person doesn't have their hand in oil investments? democrats, republicans, etc. etc….a majority of them probably have a hand in this, but they are stubborn because they want to keep everything the same to keep themselves afloat.
12:35 am
we did not have under $2.00 a gallon gas 4 years ago. Sounds like you are talking about Bush junior as the monarch like power hungry executive orders issuing type
1:10 pm
An article riddled with cliches and one anecdote after another. It could have been written decades ago.
1:13 pm
I think you are just pointing out the extreme bad stuff. I am sure there are plenty examples of extreme as well as every day good stuff. But I do agree that a lot of the sick extreme bad stuff did not happen fifty years ago.
9:35 am
Or at least it wasn't reported over the media like today. I believe that our instant world of news has made it look worse that it may really be. When was the last time you saw a warm, good news clip? Youth being innovative, helpful, and successful can give us hope, but they don't make money for the media!
10:06 pm
Remember Charley Manson?
11:10 am
fifty years ago many subjects were not talked about.
3:23 pm
Oh, it happened. But without 24-hour cable news, without the Internet, without the insatiable quest for entertainment disguised as "knowledge," people didn't know about it. Take a book I just read: Devil in the White City (which I highly recommend): during the Chicago World's Fair, a twisted serial killer murdered at least dozens, possibly hundreds, of people, mostly young women. You've probably never heard about that. Never heard his name. He was caught; how many weren't? How many John Wayne Gacys have there been?
Most people are surprised to learn that the violent crime rate has been steadily dropping. That crimes against children have been dropping. That, in fact, we live in a safer world than our parents did. "If it bleeds, it leads" … and it gets attention, buzz, eyeballs, advertising dollars.
Yes, the sick extreme bad stuff DID happen fifty years ago. It just didn't get the coverage it does today.
3:27 pm
A lot of this stuff has happened all along — including mass murders, etc. The difference is that with modern communication we hear about it more, and faster. In prior centuries the word rarely spread more than locally.
This "article" is just a listing of crimes, nothing more.
1:31 pm
No one wants to hear it, no one want to believe it but when America was more of a Bible-believing and God respecting nation the above incidents would have been infrequent incidents. Our nation needs to return to the faith of our Founding Fathers. It sure would not hurt to try if the author of the above article wants to see real and lasting change.
11:28 am
"The faith of our Founding Fathers" was that religion has no place in government or public discourse. People do the worst most evil things in the name of "God" and religion. Stop beating that dead hoarse. It is quite possible to be a decent, respectful person without dragging religion into it. That's just more brainwashing.
11:14 pm
Tell that to millions of dead Native Americans and Black slaves . Don't use revisionism when talking about the Founding Fathers. This is a nation built on business interest (less taxation and a right to sell home grown tea) and people have come here for centuries to make money. Call it immigrants looking for a "better tomorrow" or what you want to. But, this nation is built on people coming here to make or make someone else money OR the dream of doing so. Although money is not evil in itself, the pursuit of money IS the root of all evil. And that is in fact our true foundation… and I'm sure you don't want to hear that.
12:29 am
yes unfortunately the Founding Fathers were not church goers, in fact most of them detested church and religion, thats why they specifically separated state and religion when they drafted there essay. that doesn't mean we can't all be a bit nicer and all the article is saying is to stop pointing fingers and take it upon yourself to be a nicer person, even if no one else follows your compassion.
10:42 am
the founding fathers were deists
7:13 am
Not true. Go look through any newpspaper archive from 100 years ago and such horrible things happened thne as well. However there was no mass media, no radio, no TV and no internet so such occurences were almost always "local" news items rather than being report across the country from coast to coast.
3:26 pm
These things have always happened. The only difference is the greater publicity they get today.
True fact: the incidence of violent crime has dropped as the playing of video games has increased. Yes, really. So … correlation equals causation! Free Xboxes for everyone!
1:41 pm
I have a cure, cut their heads off on national TV. That will get rid of some of the scum, and others will take notice.
4:27 pm
you are correct colin, years ago….(50 ) we used to call purposefull arrest and impronment, "three hots and a cot". there is nothing new here. Human nature will out. Remember there are about 250 million people in US and probably about 1/2 are adults. Most people are behaving themselves. The right makes me crazy, like a bunch of old hens…always clucking about this and that and doing nothing to remedy things.
2:51 am
Listen to the words you are typing. Quell that hatred. It's a hard line back to the problem at hand.
1:41 pm
Where does fear come from? It comes from creating it… just like that article did.
“19 Signs That America Is Becoming A Very Heartless Place” could have easiy been written to spell out the opposite, “19 Signs That America Is Becoming A Very Hearwarming Place”
It depends on how you want to look at things. Perspective is everything.
When you want to create fear, you write about how awful and terrible evertyhting is.
When you want to create peace and harmony, you write about how wonderful everything is.
The writer’s intention is behind it.
If they intend to instill fear so that the reader will have a sense of urgency such as to buy stocks and earn money now before it gets worse you refer to how terrible and dangerous it is.
On the flip side of the coin, if the writer wants to create a feeling of satisfaction, peace and security in the reader, they write about compassion, assurance, faith, hope, trust and belief in the inherent good of all people.
May I suggest that you walk the path in the middle, not going too far oe way or the other.
We can walk down the street, drive in our cars, fly on planes, live in our homes, go anywhere we like and enjoy all that life has to offer, while at the same time being aware that on rare occasion and in very small numbers percentagewise, that unpleasant things happen, even acts of violence BUT it is not the norm and it CERTAINLY IS NOT what our country is becoming!
America is becoming greater every day in every way.
American people are more loving, more compassionate, with more common sense than ever before.
Our strength lies in overcomng adversity, facing challenges, living in harmony with out friends, family and neighbors.
We have free elections and we, as a people, select our leaders. If they do not perform to our satisfaction we oust them in the next election.
There are many more signs that oppose the “19 Signs That America Is Becoming A Very Heartless Place” and say exactly the opposite.
There are over 300 million signs that America is working toward the good of all men.
What do those signs say?
They say what each of us wants, which is found in our Constitution that exemplifies “We the People” and our agreement with ourselves, the right to life, liberty, justice and the pursuit of happiness.
America has always been heartwarming and America is becoming even more heartwarming.
Let’s count our blessings. There are many, many more than just 19.
~Steve Wardrip, USA
6:02 pm
PS: One more brief comment. Please be very aware of and diligently skeptical of the TRUE nature of our "elections". I'm not going to try to "sell" you on anything other than REAL awareness of ongoing and mostly ignored things such as establishment hand-picked candidates (both Rs and Ds), more-than-you-know election fraud (and rapidly growing!), etc. Don't blindly believe our system is great and pure, my friend. Find our for yourself!
5:53 pm
This article is next to worthless. No statistics, no studies, just blatant fear mongering. 19 stories of society's worst behavior culled together and then used as 'evidence' of the central thesis. Steve is right- you could easily pull 19 random 'feel good' articles from the internet and then say America is becoming more caring. This has nothing to do with politics or religion or anything- just one more example of the power of media gone bad. A more useful article would have been '19 signs that America's media is becoming more worthless'.
1:44 pm
This article is, obviously, written from one persons perspective. There is nothing wrong with helping people, I support that, but when government promotes policies that want to enslave people to grow their power, it will never work out. I think people need to be self-reliant and government needs to be reduced.
I also find it interesting that a pop-up ad for Obama trips on this article – now I'm really suspicious!
11:53 am
Duh! The "Why Do Conservatives Suck" article, featured on here, didn't warrant suspicion?
1:58 pm
We need a good HItler to collect all the trash walking this earth and exterminate them, leaving only the good
moral people behind.
5:57 pm
You would be part of the trash for considering such a deranged answer to a problem.
11:53 pm
Harry, who decides who is the trash and who are the "good moral people." You? Me? The government?
4:44 pm
Can we count on you Harry, to take the first exterminating bullet and thus improve the gene pool?
4:29 am
"Good" and "Hiltler" are not synonymous — they are contradictory terms — an oxymoron.
The person suggesting "We need a good hitler" is truly a moron and part of the "trash" that needs to be collected!
6:07 pm
As for HARRY the SUCK!! you should be the first to have HITLER take you out and be SHOT!!!!!!! you thing…
7:12 pm
Some of the replies amuse, even alarm, me. Yes, it is easy to be suspicious, and we all know about fear-mongering. But those who do not see the obvious fact that our government “officials” are more and more displaying insensitivity to We the People are simply not watching. Those who miss the muffled cries for compassion are not listening. And those who miss the obvious signs that America is socially deteriorating are practicing what the ostrichs do when they bury their heads in the sand.
We are not all doomed, we do not need to “return to religion”, we do not need to place blame. We need to acknowledge that our “Supreme” Court, for instance, has violated the People’s rights with its 2000 interference with our votes for our president, that it violated the basic needs of the People and even of reasonable thought with its upholding an inappropriate precedent from the 1880′s with its Citizens United decision that has plunged us into a massive mess of money-backed election processes. We need to recognize that members of congress are displaying corrupting unwillingness to compromise and get things done, not to be blamed on our president.
We have a real corruptiion problem in this country with those who purport to “run it”, and if We the People don’t wake up to the cynicism it is causing and uphold our duty to help govern this nation as our Constitution (which a sitting president referred to as “just a God damned piece of paper”) allows us to do, we will have no one to blame but ourselves for the demise of our beautiful country.
Love will help, but action will help more.
4:42 pm
Well said! Here Here !!!
1:52 am
Wow, I used to think people who read and commented on these articles were more along the lines of business people who understood the problems we are facing. Now it appears we are being inundated with the likes of the people who dwell at the Huff Post and their ridiculous comments.
4:41 pm
Why do people insist on
liberals? I don't get it?!
12:50 am
Because it is supposed to be accountable, with checks and balances, government is not designed to be either compassionate nor efficient.
If we are taught that morality is relative (reinforced constantly on TV), and there nothing beyond evolution (strongest survive), it should not surprise us that people use their talents and abilities to accrue power and benefits to themselves.
As God has been separated out of school and state, should we be surprised that people are losing the sense that their lives have transcendent purpose?
12:50 am
people do not need a punishing father figure in the afterlife to do good, act with compassion, or have morals/values that lead to a better society. Obviously many of the incidents counted above were done by men who believe in that god-as did many of the worst murderous and genocidal leaders in our written history. Even David in Judeo-Christian scripture killed off a friend so he could steal his wife. And yet he still remained God's chosen one
10:03 am
This just in! Fully half of America is below average!
2:39 pm
it's heartless that liberals let career criminals out of jail—-instead of throwing away the key.
it's very much a minority who commit most crimes; the same people over and over, for decades, from age 18 until they, thankfully, drop over dead at age 50-some; late 40s/50s is usually the life expendancy for these heartless, drugged up, drunken, criminals.
4:39 pm
Sounds to me like you never lived on the poor side of town. Accusing liberals proves the authors point. We're all taught to hate the other side. Our Country is divided, pointing fingers at one another. What about the white collar criminals that get a slap on the wrist and preferential treatment? It's all a mess and neither liberals or conservatives are to blame. We must stop blaming the "other" party. We are ONE country.
5:01 pm
Drive recovery is a important stuff. Sadly most users don’t seem to think about it until they need it which can often be too late.
5:11 pm
SATAN RULES !!!!!!! IF YOU READ THIS . I WILL BE VISITING YOU TONITE !!!!! HAAHHAHAHAH LUCIFER
8:33 pm
Good and bad has always existed. The big difference is that I can sit in Beijing and read a list compiled by the author. 25, 50, 100 years ago these would have been isolated incidents likely not known outside of a close radius. Read a book like "The Devil in the White City" describing the time around the Chicago World's Fair to see how rose colored our glasses are as we look to the past.
11:02 am
No, half of Americans are below median, not average…
11:26 am
How is this article even specific to America?! I'm certain these things and WORSE happen in other countries. I am not impressed by this article at all.
12:53 am
there are countries with less crime higher standards of living and happier people.
3:51 pm
They're all Liberals…..
4:44 am
This article is shallow, silly, sanctimonious and self-satisfied in tone. A pure waste of electrons, retinas and neurons.
2:31 pm
What's missing is decency…say what you will about the Christian religion…people who are raised in a Christian religious home have been taught (and hopefully shown) what Christian values really are…NOT the extremist, Bible thumping, far right…But the middle of the road, live by the Golden Rule type of values that USED to be taught both in the home and schools. And don't say that this isn't the way people used to live because I lived it and it's true. Morals have become a thing of the past because people connect morals with religion…sorry buddy…morals make for a civilized community…we are fast becoming a nation…and world…of Neanderthals with no moral compass!
6:28 pm
Christianity is not the only religion that teaches decency, morality and compassion. Not by a long shot.
4:36 pm
All good reasons for insurance to cover contraception! The last thing we need are more unwanted children with Mom's that know they can't take care of them, with absent fathers that took Viagra (covered by insurance) to help them create the child to begin with.
We've gone mad! Our society is a train wreck.
4:44 pm
Interesting to note the phrases "down in Texas," "down in Alabama," "down in Arizona," even "down in Maryland." Sounds like the article was written by a northeastern liberal who feels superior to the rest of the country. Well, maybe this attitude is justified given that our nation's safety net (embodied in the New Deal and the civil-rights legislation of the 1960s and 1970s) has been brutally dismantled by those "down there" politicians and voters. While we're at it, what about "down in Wall Street" for the way corporate greed has trashed benefits like health insurance and pension plans that many workers used to take for granted.

yes, I was thinking much the same thing….this little list is a very poorly put together rig of incidents that are not acurately reflective of American life…….the REAL reasons that our country (and the world behind it) is falling apart are not addressed…at all……this is nothing more than someone's little agenda…..not newsworthy.
3:28 pm
I live "down South" … what's your point?
5:10 pm
Hey, I've wanted to do some of these things. Pulling a guy out of his cab and beating the crap out of him sounded good. Was he an Arab or was it just random?
5:49 pm
"Don't count on the government to help you out" Man wouldn't that be great if people started heeding that advice? We could end all the liberal nonsense once and for all.

There is a verse in the bible,"..because iniquity shall abound the love of many shall wax cold." Whatever your faith, or lack of it, there is truth here. As we see crooked politicians enrich themselves, cronyism, repeat felons, hypocricy in the news media even the hearty can faint. But then I read about people being slaughtered in the Sudan or Somalia, about those who are imprisoned in China merely for being Christian, about the mob riots in Britain and Greece, about young prepubescent girls being forced to marry much older men in the Middle East, about the millions living in REAL, ABJECT poverty in India merely because they were not born in the right caste, and on and on, and I consider my America here even in Detroit, with the hellos and howdy doos, the warm smiles-I try to ignore the frowns-, the way people give and give when some tragedy occurs around the globe, our humanitarian efforts, the way we are the best place for immigrants to be in the world, legal or illegal, then I get warm all over, draw my family to me, and prayerfully thank God that I am an American:)

Unfortunately, 90% of Americans have their heads up their asses and don't understand anything going on, how it works, why it works, what it leads to, what effects can result, and how to rectify the problem. Instead, they assume they know what's going on because they heard someone on some news channel say 1 thing for 4 minutes (even though I guarantee they lack the comprehension to truely understand what they heard) and all of a sudden they've become experts on the topic. Unfortunately, the majority of this country is as smart as sarah palin, if even… which is exactly why someone as stupid as her could possibly be elected to a position of power. A stupid person looks very smart to an even stupider person… (cont)

And of course everyone likes to blame Obama, even though he's been the best thing to happen to this country, and if you ask these "obama haters" why they believe what they do, they won't be able to give you a cogent solid sound answer based on logic, and will MAYBE be able to repeat something they heard on TV, which ultimately won't answer your question to them anyways. IE, why do you say obama is causing gas prices to go up? Answer: "Well because he's greedy and just cares about himself and he's a terrorist!" And as you can see, no where in that answer was the question actually addressed/answered/rebutted. That's the true problem with this country.
This country is becoming something akin to a reality-tv show piece of garbage and our true forefathers would be absolutely sickened to see what has happened to it. Deny this all you want, but at least do so with sound logic, and not a "ur WRONG OBAMA IS A MUSLIM" or some other thing that is completely false about obama/democrats/liberals/anyone you've decided to dislike because they media told you to.

the author os this POS is an Idiot!
The things that are TRULY wrong with this country are totally ignored by her…….this article is nothing more than a cheap moralist agenda that is sadly, sadly out of date and out of touch…..
11:50 am
There is no meaningful comparison of other periods with reliable data to prove that extreme things haven't always happened. With the present internet, social media and news feeds, edgy and more extreme kinds of events, however, isolated become central issues and news stories.
4:53 pm
This article is as dumb as a bag of hammers…a bunch of anecdotes about nasty little things people do to each other are not "signs" of anything. Someone else can cherrypick headlines for charitable or heroic acts of altruism and say they are signs that society is becoming really really swell.
Next time try something a little more scientific….like rates of crime, incarceration, assault/murder, suicide, charitable giving etc as they change OVER TIME. Crime and assault as a metric would put the nadir of modern america at around 1993, depending on the data.

my two cents is……………………………………………………..

Today's heartlessness started at the top just three years ago. Are we better off today than we were three years ago. You know the answer to that one.
2:09 am
What a load of nonsense. This article is evidence of nothing. As if things this rotten have never occurred before. This article is the purest example of anecdotal evidence.
9:36 am
You have to understand that all of this and more has been going on since the beginning of time. We see it all the time because our communications have greatly increased. In reality, things are getting better because we are more aware of these problems which have been common, but white washed by various groups. Look to the future for it is bright. Even above the darkest clouds, the sun does shine. In the darkest night, tomorrow will bring the same sun to light the way. Above all, God is there. He will, one day, purge the wicked.
10:25 am
What are you… 5 years old? __Never read a history book or newspaper? (back when there were newspapers) __This is reminiscient of a stupid AP story a few years back, during a time of relative peace and prosperity, that cherry picked a few weird stories and declared "everything is seemingly spinning out of control."__Really! Few of these incidents stand out as unlike anything we haven't seen going back hundreds of years.__Well… except for the TSA idiots harrassing normal Americans just so they don't get the government sued for the crime of actually looking for real terrorists.__Yeah, there are plenty of subhuman violent criminals out there. There have been since we came down from the trees. Funny how overrepresented the city of Detroit is among the horror stories you present. Incidentally, America's success at locking these thugs up is actually cited in some complaints that we're "heartless."__
10:26 am
But wait…
Oh no! The FBI went looking for criminals! Yes, mistakes do happen but I'd rather see some misguided agents chainsaw my front door than have them give up on fighting crime. They figured out what they'd done wrong and apologized. I bet they bought a new door too.__Food stamps? The government has very consciously loosened up the standards that make people eligible for free eats through SNAP. Of COURSE more people are getting food stamps now. That has nothing to do with the economy and everything to do with politicians actively trying to PUT more people on them. __Corruption? Puh leez! Only today, a report came out how one of the most historically notoriously corrupt state governments, New Jersey, now has some of the best measures in place to prevent it. Sure, there are the headline grabbing incidents in Washington and locally but they get much more attention than much more egregious incidents in the past.__
10:26 am
People stealing gasoline? Back in the '70s, some dumb crooks were actually poisoning themselves with gasoline as they tried to siphon it out of people's cars.__And just try looking up the name of Kitty Genovese some time. Now THAT was heartless.__Meanwhile, numerous studies have documented that Americans are the most generous people in the world, contributing more to charity per capita than anyone else. Look it up. Thankfully, many of us dislike the idea of foisting the job of helping our fellow man off onto some governmental leviathan which steals people's money to hand out to others. __"Heartless" indeed!
2:36 pm
lets be honest, evil has always been among us, only nowadays, we hear about these incidents due to technology.
6:38 am
This article does little to prove its point that the world is getting worse. Sure it points out incidents which highlight the worst traits of humanity, but it does absolutely nothing to compare the current problems with the past performance of the country (which would be necessary to prove the writer's premise that America is getting worse). This is in fact, a very poorly written article. Dear writer: we are all aware that there are some horrible, sick, terrifying people/incidents that happen every day. But please go further and prove your point that America has gotten worse. Any random sample of newspaper articles from the 1950's or 1920's would reveal equally horrifying incidents and reprehensible actors. Everyone wants to look back and pretend that our country used to be some wholly moral entity without nearly as much fault or blame. To those people I say: Go take a history class dealing with domestic and foriegn policy in America over the past 100 years. Next consider who was enjoying the status quo of the bygone american societies that everyone wants to glorify, and consider who was oppressed, mistreated, or ignored by that same status quo. Finally, become a better person yourself and do your best to be a good person. Otherwise you are just like this author: full of complaints and fear, but devoid of solutions or hope.
1:42 pm
There isn't anything new here other than larger population than 20 years ago so these incidents happen more often and the fact that today's social media and worldwide news media makes the information more available for everyone to see. It wasn't that long ago that if you lived on the east coast you wouldn't have heard anything about a incident in Montana. As the population grows and social media grows with it we will hear more and more about these incidents and while it does disgust the majority of us there is also a part of the population that will use information in these stories to create their own sick and perverted crimes. Used to be that details of these type of sick crimes were not broadcasted like they are today. Today, our news media has a bad habit of not being as socially responsible as they should be in the almighty chase for the dollar!
